One of the themes I incorporate fairly often into my writing is the idea of time as a spiral instead of a line. A line, to me, implies that each event is isolated, with no pattern or connection. I’ve noticed that in a lot of cases, time does have a pattern.

Let’s take for example, a simple segment of the timespiral of the United States.

~ 1918-1920; The Spanish Flu spreads across the world, affecting and killing millions.

~ 2019-2020; Covid19 does the same.

~ 1929-1939; The Great Depression devastates the financial fates of the entire planet.

~2008-2025(So far.); From Housing Crises, bailouts, stock market crashes, inflation, and worries about tariff-wars, we’ve been hit over and over with so many smaller, stacking financial issues that pretty much no one hopes that we will ever be able to recover.

~1914-1945; World War 1 and World War 2 sees multiple nations fighting in intense battles that takes millions of lives.

~2014-2025(So Far); The Russio-Ukrainian War drags on, as the entire world watches. This war isn’t the only one going on. The Iran-Israel conflict, along with threats from North Korea, sets the entire world on edge, wondering if we are already in World War 3.

It’s interesting to me that these events fall about a century apart from each other. I have also noticed, at least in my own life, that a similar pattern follows. Like the Wheel of Life, the are highs and lows. However, every time we hit those highs or lows, they are kind of…bigger. The highs are higher, the lows hit harder. BUT, when those hit, WE have also grown. We’ve become stronger, smarter. So we are able to overcome those bigger challenges, and chase those loftier goals.

But generally, the pattern holds. Every individual’s spiral, interacts with the larger spiral of family, community, nation, and world. Ever outward and ever larger do all of these spirals grow, but at least it can give as a pattern to plan for.

What about you? Sure, this might be how I see time, but I’m curious to hear other’s point of view, too. If you’re a part of the Discord, maybe let us know! ^.^
